10 Nearly Free Ways to Enjoy Your Wheelchair Van This Summer

Fun Ideas For the Whole Family

Deckchairs on Beach

It’s time to bring out the shades, sunscreen and bug repellent. Summer is officially here which means it’s time to get out and about in your wheelchair van. Every city has it’s own unique, fun things to do throughout the summer. It could be ballet in the park, a sports game or a drive in the evening. Whatever your go to activities are, grab a friend or family member and go make some memories.

Here are my picks for fun things to do this summer:

#10 – Go for a cruise

It’s time to bring out the shades, sunscreen and bug repellent. Summer is officially here which means it’s time to get out and about in your wheelchair van. Every city has its own unique, fun things to do throughout the summer. It could be ballet in the park, a sports game or a drive in the evening. Whatever your go-to activities are, grab a friend or family member, hop into your wheelchair van, and go make some memories.

#9 – Take the family for ice cream

A summer classic! Each city has the go-to place for ice cream. Here in Winnipeg, there are classics such as the Bridge Drive Inn, Half Moon or Sargent Sundae. Usually for a few bucks, you can enjoy a cone or ice cream sundae. The atmosphere is usually fun and ice cream on a hot day always makes for a nice treat.

#8 – Go for a drive to a park on the other side of your city

A change of scenery is always good. Put everyone in the wheelchair van, pick a spot in the city you have never been to before and find a park to visit. This makes for a great opportunity to play with the kids or grand children and see parts of the city you normally wouldn’t.

#7 – Fill up the van and go to the beach

Nothing says summer like going to the beach. Canada has amazing lakes and rivers for swimming. Pack up the wheelchair accessible vehicle, bring the beach towels, food and head off to your favourite place.

#6 – Head off to a friend’s place for a BBQ

Make an evening out of it and head over to a friends place for a BBQ. Nothing says summer more than enjoying a good burger or hotdog on a deck or patio.

#5 – Find a place to go stargazing

Bring some blankets, bug spra, and hot chocolate and drive out to a field late at night to watch the stars. Summer is filled with meteor showers, comets and planets shining bright in the sky.

#4 – Connect with Nature and Go camping

Everybody has his or her favourite place to go camping. For some, it’s as deep you can get into the bush and really roughing it and for others, a trailer, air conditioning and running water is all they need to feel connected to nature. Whatever your preference is, go out and enjoy nature. And make sure to stop by the store on the way out to grab marshmallows for roasting.

#3 – Head to the mall

Everybody has his or her favourite place to go camping. For some, it’s as deep you can get into the bush and really roughing it and for others, a trailer attached to your wheelchair van, air conditioning and running water is all they need to feel connected to nature. Whatever your preference is, go out and enjoy nature. And make sure to stop by the store on the way out to grab marshmallows for roasting

#2 – Take in a Sports Game

Not every team charges a lot of money. There are a lot of great junior teams that play hard and the games are every bit, if not more enjoyable than the professional teams. Show your support by wearing the teams colours and head on out to have a good time.

#1 – Go to the drive-in movies

This is my personal favourite. Not a lot of cities have the traditional drive-in anymore but a lot of places are making their own portable versions. I know here in Winnipeg, in the summer, some of the surface parking lots are turned into drive-ins and play old movies. It’s great and you can’t beat the free admission price. Back up your wheelchair van, sit under the hatch and enjoy the show!

Conclusion

Summer is what you make of it. There are plenty of things to do and see that are or nearly are free. Need help getting around this summer? Let us know and we can help you.
