Summary

The CAD Drafter & 3D Modeler is responsible for transforming initial design concepts and sketches into precise technical drawings and 3D models using SolidWorks. This role ensures that all engineering drawings adhere to established specifications, standards, and design intent. Working under general supervision, the modeler follows structured guidelines and collaborates with engineering and design teams to produce accurate representations of internally designed and externally sourced components. These assets support both the product development process and high-quality visualizations for internal and client use.

Responsibilities

CAD Design & Drafting •Transform rough sketches, measurements, and specifications into detailed 2D and 3D CAD drawings using SolidWorks. •Prepare scale drawings and technical documentation that meet established design standards. •Revise and update designs to reflect changes and feedback from the engineering and production teams. •Identify critical dimensions, tolerances, materials, and specifications. •Use SolidWorks PDM to store, manage, and retrieve files efficiently. •Resolve discrepancies between design intent and actual builds, making needed adjustments. 3D Modeling & Product Integration •Create realistic 3D CAD models of externally sourced products to be used in our layouts and vehicle designs. •Incorporate supplier and component data into our internal design libraries. •Ensure all modeled components meet accuracy and usability standards for our design and production workflows. Collaboration & Documentation •Collaborate with engineers, team leads, and department staff to verify project requirements. •Track material and equipment requirements using design files and system documentation. •Support ongoing design initiatives by contributing to documentation and layout consistency. •Complete other related drafting or modeling tasks in alignment with company priorities.

Attributes

Detail-Oriented & Precise – I have a sharp eye for dimensions, tolerances, and mechanical relationships, ensuring all drawings and models meet exact technical standards. Technically Skilled – I’m fluent in SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM, with the ability to create clear, functional, and organized part files, assemblies, and 3D renderings. Visualization Expert – I can take a concept or sketch and translate it into a fully realized 3D model, considering how parts interact, move, and are manufactured. Problem Solver – I can identify conflicts in drawings, resolve inconsistencies, and proactively recommend design improvements or alternative approaches. Collaborative Communicator – I engage well with engineers, project managers, and production teams to clarify requirements and ensure that the end design supports the larger project goals. Organized & Methodical – I manage CAD libraries, maintain design file consistency, and follow version control processes to support efficient collaboration and documentation. Adaptable & Curious – I stay open to learning and adapting new tools or features in SolidWorks, and I’m eager to apply new knowledge to improve my outputs. Time-Managed & Reliable – I prioritize effectively, meet deadlines, and consistently deliver accurate work—even when handling multiple concurrent design tasks. Client- and User-Aware – I understand the end use of the design, considering not just the engineering aspects, but also the user experience, manufacturing process, and serviceability. Committed to Quality – I take pride in producing clean, complete, and professional design packages that reduce ambiguity and support successful builds.

Software/Technology/Platforms We Use

This role requires strong proficiency in SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM, with the ability to create complex technical drawings and 3D models from initial concepts, sketches, or reference products.

What Success Looks Like

In your first few weeks, you become familiar with our vehicle layouts, design processes, and SolidWorks file structure. You're transforming hand-drawn sketches and verbal input into detailed CAD files, and your 3D models are being used across the design team. After a few months, you're confidently supporting multiple design projects, producing clean and accurate layouts, and collaborating with engineers and procurement to ensure every part is documented and ready for build. You’ve become the go-to person for CAD accuracy, model integration, and making sure our designs meet the highest standards of clarity and consistency.
