Adapting Your Rear Entry Dodge Grand Caravan To Be More Flexible
The Dodge Grand Caravan is one of the most popular vans to convert into a rear entry or side entry wheelchair van. A lot of people like them because they are affordable, quality and offer a variety of options to meet people’s budgets and needs. In a typical rear entry wheelchair van conversion on a Dodge Grand Caravan, you are able to have the driver, front passenger, and the two mid row captain’s seats plus a single position for a wheelchair. This works most of the time, however, for some who purchase a rear entry Dodge Grand Caravan, they need more options than this wheelchair van offers.
There are six seating options now available for the rear entry Dodge Grand Caravan. Depending on how many wheelchairs need to be carried or who is traveling in the wheelchair van, there is a seating configuration to meet your needs. Read on to learn more, and as always, feel free to reach out to our team about wheelchair vans in Winnipeg.
Fixed Mid Row Seats
The standard seating in a rear entry Dodge Grand Caravan uses fixed mid row seating to maximize the clearance between the two seats. This allows for the wheelchair in a long cut rear entry van to move in between the two seats. For a lot of wheelchair users, they like this option as it allows them to be a part of the action happening in the front half of the van. As long as the wheelchair is 23″ or less in width, they are able to fit in between the two seats.
Another advantage to this type of setup is if a second wheelchair position is needed. The second wheelchair position is placed behind the first position. In certain situations, where non-ambulatory and wheelchair patients are being transported or a family with two children in wheelchairs, this is a great option.
One of the limitations, however, of the fixed mid row seats is for those who are taller. The leg room can be a bit cramped. For families with small children, the fixed row seats work really well as leg room is not an issue. As well, as children grown, the seating configuration can be changed. We recommend if it’s not important for the person in the wheelchair to be sitting mid row or if a second wheelchair position is not required to go with the next option.
Mid Row Flip & Fold Seats
Another option which is becoming popular in the rear entry Dodge Grand Caravan is the flip & fold mid row seat. This seat is very different from the fixed seat as it allows the passenger more control on how they sit in the seat. The seat allows for more foot room than the fixed seating. The wheelchair passenger then sits behind the mid row.
As well, when the seats are not in use they can be flipped completely to the side. When the seats are in use they do sit over the area where the wheelchair would go. The wheelchair position is in the second half of the van.
The flip & fold seats work really well in a couple of situations. The first is when there are adults being transported in the van and need the extra leg room. The second is if the van is used primarily for wheelchair transport, the two wheelchair positions are open. As well, for the person in the midrow wheelchair position, they would have a bit more room as they would not be right up against the two seats.
3rd Row Flip & Fold Bench
One last seating configuration available in the rear entry Dodge Grand Caravan is the flip & fold bench. The bench would go in the 3rd row to replace the seats lost during the conversion. This option works well when additional passengers are needed. The bench can hold two more passengers.
However, the bench seat is typically used with the fixed mid row seats. However, depending on the use of the van, it may work to use the flip & fold seats in the middle and the flip & fold bench seat.
All of these seating options make the rear entry Dodge Grand Caravan a very versatile wheelchair accessible vehicle to use for both personal and commercial use. If you are ready to learn more about the options we have for wheelchair vans in Winnipeg, click below.
