10 Signs You’re Ready For A Mobility Vehicle (And What To Do About It)

mobility vehicle questions

This week’s blog post is all about deciding when you are ready to start looking for a mobility accessible vehicle. You might have been toying with the idea for a while but things have come to a point now where you think it might be time. You might be debating a side entry van or rear entry wheelchair van, hand controls, transfer boards and the like.

To help make things easy for you, I have compiled a list of the 10 most popular reasons people tell us they are are ready to transition into a mobility vehicle.

Top 10 Signs You Are Ready For A Mobility Vehicle

Sign #1 – You’re finding it harder to get around

You may have noticed over the past few months your mobility is slowing down and it is not what it used to be.

Sign #2 – Moving your child (or person you manually lift) in & out of your vehicle is becoming too difficult

Children grow up and no matter how badly we want (or maybe not), they keep getting bigger and bigger. They get taller and heavier and become more challenging and awkward to move. Basically, it gets to the point where moving them is a back injury waiting to happen or an injury of some kind to your loved one. It is an eventuality because their size is too much for you to move safely.

This leads me to the next point…

Sign #3 – You’ve injured yourself transferring your loved one in & out of the vehicle

See point above…you unintentionally injured yourself (or your loved one) while doing a transfer.

Sign #4 – You’re tired of being confined to a single area i.e. apartment or house

We hear it every single day, how challenging it can become to be limited to your home or neighbourhood. However, once you have your own mobility vehicle, it’s amazing how that changes almost overnight and the world becomes your playground again. For one recent customer, they were out of the house more over a two-week period then they had been for the past two years. He was extremely happy to have that kind of freedom again.

Sign #5 – Other forms of transportation have become or are unreliable to get you to where you want in a reasonable amount of time

One of the complaints we hear quite often is the people you depend on to get you from A to B to C, are unreliable or have become unreliable. You are forced to wait for hours at places you don’t necessarily want to be because you are stuck waiting for your ride.

Sign #6 – You want the convenience to go where you want, when you want

One of the biggest advantages to having your own wheelchair accessible vehicle is you can decide where you want to go and when you want to leave. If the point above has affected you, you know how wonderful it would be to have the say when you come and go with your own mobility vehicle. A lot of options exist for the type of vehicle to choose. If you are thinking about a side entry wheelchair van, you learn more about the Vantage Mobility conversion we offer or to learn more about the rear entry conversion you can go here.

Sign #7 – You’ve been in an accident and suffered a spinal cord injury

You may have been injured in an accident and you are confined to a wheelchair but want to have the same freedom and independence as before. A mobility vehicle is able to help provide your freedom.

Sign #8 – A family member (or yourself) has had an accident and suffered a spinal cord injury

A spinal cord injury is devastating and completely life altering. A mobility vehicle can provide some level of independence and freedom.

Sign #9 – You want the ability to drive your own mobility vehicle

Similar to point 6; you want to have the ability to drive your own mobility vehicle. Depending on your level of mobility, hand controls may be something you require, you can learn more about Sure Grip hand controls which we can install on your vehicle by visiting them here.

Sign #10 – You’re ready to convert your vehicle to a mobility vehicle using assistive technology to easily exit/enter & drive your car, SUV or pickup

Life is a lot easier when you have the right technology to get you around and in & out of vehicles. You might have tried a technology a little while ago and really liked how simple it made your life. You’re ready to have one of your own. For example, using a lift to exit and enter the vehicle may be something you are interested in.
