This funding opportunity is a government program supporting projects that enhance active transportation options in communities across Canada.

  • Funding is available for two types of projects:
    • Planning projects: Developing strategies and engagement efforts to expand active transportation.
    • Capital projects: Building or improving infrastructure such as paths, sidewalks, crossings, and safety enhancements.
  • Up to $500 million is available nationwide, with at least 10% reserved for Indigenous-led projects.

 

Who Is Eligible for the Active Transportation Fund?

The fund is open to:

  • Municipal and regional governments
  • Public sector organizations
  • Indigenous governments and organizations
  • Non-profit organizations
  • Provincial and territorial governments

 

Not eligible: Individuals and for-profit businesses.

 

Who Can Apply for the Active Transportation Fund?

  • Eligible groups can apply directly to Housing, Infrastructure, and Communities Canada.
  • Indigenous applicants and organizations in the territories can still apply for capital projects.
  • Other application streams are currently closed.

 

What Are the Conditions of the Active Transportation Fund?

  • Funding covers up to $50 million per capital project.
  • The government may fund 60-100% of a project’s total cost, depending on the recipient type and project location.
  • Costs for furniture or non-fixed items not essential to the project are not eligible for funding.
  • Project selection considers factors like regional distribution, equity, and impact on accessibility.

 

Deadline Dates to Know

  • April 9, 2025 – Last day for Indigenous and territorial applicants to apply for capital projects.
