What is the McLean Legacy Fund in Canada?

  • The McLean Legacy Fund is a $200 million fund created under the Federal Indian Day Schools Settlement to support Survivors, their children, and grandchildren.
  • Launched on July 7, 2025, applications are open until the end of September 2025.
  • The goal is to help communities heal, revive language and culture, share truth, and honour history.

 

 

Who is eligible for the McLean Legacy Fund?

  • Only Survivor Communities that had a Federal Indian Day School listed in Schedule K of the Settlement Agreement can apply.
  • Individual survivors or small groups cannot apply on their own.

What are the conditions of the McLean Legacy Fund?

  • There are two funding categories:
    • Category One: One‑time $25,000 for eligible communities to set up a Survivor Committee. This covers costs like meeting spaces, elder honoraria, and refreshments.

 

    • Category Two: Program funding under four pillars:
      • Healing & Wellness: Up to $250,000 per year for four years.
      • Language & Culture: Up to $100,000 per year for four years.
      • Commemoration: Up to $100,000 total over four years.
      • Truth Telling: Up to $100,000 total over four years.

 

  • Applications can be made under one pillar per funding round. Another pillar can be chosen in future rounds.
  • Funds for multi‑year projects are paid annually.
  • Board members avoid any conflict of interest by stepping away from decisions involving their own communities. 

 

How much funding is available?

  • Total fund: $200 million.

 

  • Start‑up support: Up to $25,000 per eligible community to establish a Survivor Committee.

 

  • Program funding by pillar:
    • Healing: Up to $250,000/year for 4 years
    • Language & Culture: Up to $100,000/year for 4 years
    • Commemoration: Up to $100,000 overall
    • Truth Telling: Up to $100,000 overall 

 

Deadline dates to know

  • The first application window runs from July 7, 2025 to September 30, 2025 (Apply here).
  • Funding decisions will be announced in November–December 2025, with payments starting in January 2026.
