    • Building or upgrading shelters and supportive housing

 

  • Data and collaboration are key. Applicants must:
    • Use HIFIS (Homeless Individuals and Families Information System) or a similar tool to track progress
    • Work together with local, provincial, and Indigenous partners
    • Follow a “Housing First” model where possible

 

  • Funding must be used only for eligible activities, like:
    • Shelter renovations
    • Mental health supports
    • Indigenous-led healing services
    • Prevention services like eviction help and utility payment support

 

How much funding is available?

  • The Government of Canada has committed $5 billion over nine years (2019–2028) to the Reaching Home program.
  • Funds are split across multiple streams:
    • Designated Communities (urban areas)
    • Indigenous Homelessness
    • Rural and Remote Homelessness
    • Territorial Homelessness
    • Community Capacity and Innovation

 

  • Local allocations vary. For example:
    • Winnipeg, MB: $174.7 million (2019–2028)
    • Yellowknife, NT: $535,000 (2025–2026)
    • Métis Nation–Saskatchewan: Over $5 million across streams (2024–2025)

 

Deadline dates to know

  • Communities must meet all program requirements by March 31, 2026
  • Check with your local Community Entity for specific application deadlines
