Safety in Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles

Whether the van is used in a personal or commercial application, there are many factors to consider for a wheelchair accessible van purchase. These include the the size and style of the van and whether it has rear entry or side entry wheelchair access. While these are important to consider when purchasing a wheelchair accessible van, our top priority with every van that we provide is passenger safety.

Top Priority: Safety

All of MoveMobility’s wheelchair van conversions are crash tested to ensure they meet and exceed National Compliance Regulations set by Transport Canada and FMVSS/CMVSS (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standards). The safety standards we enforce include wheelchair occupant restraint systems, intended for passengers who ride in their wheelchair in the vehicle. At MoveMobility, compromising safety in a mobility van is never an option.

Wheelchairs are typically designed and tested for use in an accessible vehicle. Users must use the four certified wheelchair restraints which easily attach to the wheelchair and vehicle, serving as seatbelts. Compliant Wheelchair Restraint Systems

Safety restraints during wheelchair transportation are the law and can prevent injuries in the event of a motor vehicle accident or sudden stop. As with any vehicle, seatbelts must be properly secured and fastened across the passenger’s chest, shoulder and pelvis before the vehicle is driven. Wheelchair passengers must wear a shoulder strap that is attached to the vehicle by a harness. Caregivers should take precautions by checking equipment for rips, tears or twists. A lap belt is not a sufficient restraint system for those in wheelchairs.

  1. The pelvic and shoulder restraints are used in the crash tests and both belts are recommended for use during transport.
  2. Restraints should be 30 mph frontal crash tested to confirm the performance of the wheelchair tiedown and restraint systems.
  3. Tiedown straps should be designed to be compatible with the wheelchair being transported to ensure passenger safety.
  4. Wheelchair securement equipment should be permanently labeled as certified for use in a motor vehicle. Instructions and/or warnings must be provided.

Why Do We Need Wheelchair Restraint Systems?

Wheelchair vans are modified to provide the space needed for wheelchair entry and maneuverability. The interior space is necessary to safely secure wheelchair passengers in the vehicle to prevent the wheelchair user from colliding with the vehicle structure in the case of an accident. Wheelchair securement systems are mandatory to stabilize the wheelchair passenger. Examples of the safest wheelchair restraints for wheelchair vans include AMF Protektor Restraints and Q’Straints.
