What is a wheelchair accessible minivan?

A wheelchair accessible minivan is a minivan typically used by families who have a child or other family member that requires an accessible vehicle. They are also used by programs and organizations needing a small vehicle, such as some First Nations communities and adult daycares.

If you’re looking for a wheelchair van to transport more than one passenger, then a minivan is probably not the right choice for you.

How many passengers can a wheelchair accessible minivan have?

A minivan can have up to 4 passengers or 1-2 wheelchairs–or, a configuration of both.

How big are minivans?

A minivan is the smallest wheelchair accessible type we offer at MoveMobility. A minivan is typically 16.5 feet long, 6 feet tall, and 6 feet wide. This means that minivans are able to park in most parkades and that they’re easier to drive on narrow roads.

How much does a wheelchair accessible minivan cost?

A converted minivan from MoveMobility can cost between $92,000 and $110,000. Learn more about what makes up the cost of a converted minivan here

What license do you need to drive a wheelchair accessible minivan?

To drive a converted minivan in most provinces in Canada all you need is a regular driver’s license. If you can drive a car, you can drive a converted minivan. Learn more about license requirements for wheelchair accessible vans in Canada, province by province, here

Who is a minivan right for?

An accessible minivan is typically right for personal users (such as families) who want a smaller wheelchair accessible van to transport a family member. They are also frequently used by First Nations communities and adult daycares who need a smaller option.

What minivans do you sell at MoveMobility?

We sell accessible Dodge Grand Caravans and Chrysler Grand Caravans in either a rear entry minivan or side entry minivan option.

A full size conversion is an accessible van, larger than a minivan, that is typically used commercially by organizations transporting many individuals who use wheelchairs, walkers, or canes.

How many passengers can full size vans have?

A full size wheelchair accessible van can have up to 10 passengers or up to 4 wheelchairs–or, a combination of the two.

How big is a full size van?

A full size van is, no surprise here, larger than a minivan. Specifically, a full size van is around 25 feet long, 7 feet tall, and 9 feet wide–but depending on the model, the length and height can vary. This can give you an idea of where you’ll be able to drive and park the van. For example, full size vans typically can’t fit in a parkade because they’re too tall.

How much does a full size wheelchair van cost?

A full size van from MoveMobility can cost between $130,000 to $180,000. Learn more about what makes up the cost of a full size wheelchair accessible van here

What license do you need to drive full size vans?

Just like with the minivan, to drive a full size van in most provinces in Canada all you need is a regular driver’s license. Learn more about license requirements for wheelchair accessible vans in Canada, province by province, here

Who is a full size wheelchair accessible van right for?

Full size vans are typically the best option for:

1. Organizations transporting up to 10 passengers and/or more than 1 wheelchair, such as adult daycares, care homes, and accessible public transit organizations.

2. Drivers comfortable driving a larger vehicle. A full size wheelchair van is larger than a minivan, which means some drivers may find it intimidating trying to maneuver it around small spaces. That being said, many drivers find that the Ram Promaster feels similar to driving a Dodge Grand Caravan.
