Have you ever considered how simple it is to get into and out of a vehicle? If you have been diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy, it’s not a simple task. According to HealthPartners, over 50,000 Canadians have been diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy.
MoveMobility is thrilled to have been part of an event that made life for a local Winnipeg family who live with Muscular Dystrophy a little bit easier.
MoveMobility partnered with Variety, the Children’s Charity of Manitoba, Society for Manitobans with Disabilities (SMD), Disabilities and Health Support Unit (DHSU), and Muscular Dystrophy Canada in order to purchase a 2019 Wheelchair Accessible Dodge Promaster for the family.
There are six boys in the DeVries family, three of whom have been diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy. The family was looking for an accessible vehicle that would ensure they could travel together.
On March 26, 2019 several representatives from each of the charitable organizations and MoveMobility made their way to the DeVries home to surprise the family with their “gift of a lifetime”, the Dodge Promaster. A few of us had a hard time keeping the tears back as the parents recalled times when they couldn’t include their son who is in a wheelchair for outings, such as shopping trips, school activities, or when Dad wasn’t available to lift him in and out of the truck. It was clear to see how much this accessible vehicle meant to their family, and how it was going to make things a little bit easier for all of them.
The family had to wait until the Variety “Gold Heart Gala” to receive their vehicle, to allow MoveMobility the time to configure and customize it to their exact needs.

Variety’s Gold Heart Gala
Variety held an unbelievably joyous event with the help of many sponsors, volunteers, donors, and contributors that enable “kids to be kids”. During the Gold Heart Gala, several deserving families were presented with very important gifts. These gifts help lift the financial burdens they have faced with for their children’s medical devices. They included wheelchairs and adaptive equipment.
The Accessible Dodge Promaster was officially gifted to the DeVries family at the Gold Heart Gala, hosted by Variety Manitoba on May 4, 2019.The Dodge Promaster was the “star” attraction at the Gala, and the family was eager to finally drive home with their new wheels!
The Reaction of the Family at the Gold Heart Gala?
Having the vehicle will make transportation for their family much easier; it would take the anxiety, stress, and worry off their minds, because their son could be transferred into the vehicle with a lift, and the vehicle would be large enough for the whole family to ‘finally’ travel together.
The DeVries family said – “how much the vehicle meant to them, and how it would make their lives run smoother in different ways.” They were already making plans on where to go!
Seeing the smiles on their faces and the happy tears in their eyes was more than enough to show that they were truly grateful for the gift, and that they were ready to make new memories.
We look forward to working with Variety, the Children’s Charity of Manitoba in the future to ensure that families living with disabilities aren’t faced with financial hardship, and to provide safe transportation for their children.
