What Is the Manitoba Accessibility Fund?

Removing barriers and creating inclusive spaces shouldn’t be a challenge for organizations—it should be an opportunity. That’s where the Manitoba Accessibility Fund (MAF) steps in. Ready to learn how this fund can help you make a meaningful difference? Let’s dive in!

What Is the Manitoba Accessibility Fund?

The Manitoba Accessibility Fund provides grants to organizations in Manitoba to help them remove barriers and create accessible spaces for everyone. The fund supports projects that align with The Accessibility for Manitobans Act by focusing on these key areas:

  • Customer Service: Making goods and services accessible.
  • Employment: Removing barriers to hiring, recruiting, and retaining employees.
  • Information and Communications: Improving access to information in print, online, and in person.
    Who runs it?
  • Managed by The Winnipeg Foundation and launched in 2021 with a $20 million investment.
  • Administered by Manitoba’s Department of Families.

Can You Apply for the Manitoba Accessibility Fund?

Yes! If you’re a Manitoba-based organization or business, you might be eligible. Here’s a quick breakdown of who can apply:

  • Non-profit organizations
  • Local businesses registered in Manitoba
  • Municipalities and local authorities
  • On-reserve organizations meeting eligibility requirements
  • Schools, colleges, and universities

If you applied before and didn’t get selected, don’t worry! They can keep your application on file for future funding rounds.

What Things Are Funded?

The MAF funds projects that focus on accessibility and inclusivity. Eligible activities include:

  • Hosting events or programs that raise awareness about accessibility barriers.
  • Creating tools, resources, or training to meet accessibility standards.
  • Using technology to improve access to digital or physical information (like websites or printed materials).
However, some things aren’t covered, such as:
  • Renovations or retrofits to buildings.
  • Out-of-province projects or travel.
  • Core education, health, or municipal services.

How Much Funding Is Available?

Approved projects can receive up to $50,000, including 10% for administrative costs. But keep in mind:

  • Funding might be less than requested, so it’s a good idea to look for other funding sources too.
  • Only one application per intake is allowed, but you can partner on other projects.

What’s the Deadline for the Fund?

Mark your calendar!

  • Applications open: January 6, 2025
